KEY # 10
“In a career you either go forward or backward; you don’t stand still. Every manager must continually improve his or her skills in a lifetime self-improvement program”.
- Mary Kay Ash
Be quick to ask for help and information when needed.
Here are five ways to ask for help and get it:
- Select the right person to ask.
- Select the right time to ask.
- Select the right questions to ask.
- Give them credit for their advice and counsel.
- Express your thanks specifically.
Another aspect of asking for help lies within the art of delegation. When you are in a position to do it, delegation can be one of your most effective leadership and teaching tools. When you are effective as a delegator, you convey your respect for others, your openness to their help, and your humility. After all, no person can know or do everything. No individual has the talent to accomplish every function in a business. Consequently, most successful people are delegators. Here are six important steps to successful delegation:
- Pinpoint the task.
- Select the right person.
- Make the assignment clear.
- Supply support or additional help as necessary.
- Check on progress.
- Evaluate and reward.
